t-shirts, books and lightsabres -the Star wars merchandise craze
This bank holiday was national ‘Star wars’ day -que all the jokes about May the 4th be with you -well done, glad we got that out the way early. But this made me think of Star Wars- I really enjoyed watching the first three movies- none of these episode one to three, vader as a child nonsense and the amount of merchandising the movies had. If it can be sold it has had the star wars logo on it -Bubble bath, posters, toys etc- but maybe thats the brilliance of George Lucas right there.
Star Wars was the first film to think about using the potential of merchandising the film- and it worked more than anyone wouldve thought it wouldve. In Lucas’s contract he got to have the merchandising rights, which 20 century Fox werent to bothered with at the time -why would they? No-one knew how big the films were going to be, Fox didnt know how much money the films were going to make -But George Lucas clearly knew how to market the movie. Taking the merchandising rights allowed him to produced what he wanted to help sell the movie -and when Star wars mania hit the world, he just couldnt keep up with the demand for the promotional merchandise. This demand also helped convince the banks to help fund Lucas for the second Star wars movie and put more money into his company LucasFilm.
Star Wars did change the way films could be made, but also how films are marketed to us to. Ever since there have been art books, action figures, t-shirts and many more items of branded merchandise. The studios wouldnt ignore the huge amounts of money that was coming in from merchandise revenues -but then who would ignore that? More exposure for their movie and bringing in some more revenue. Because most of us, even if its just one item, have some form of movie merchandise lying around the house -posters, t-shirts, cds, books -the potential for it is huge -and George Lucas took advantage of it to help his ‘small space picture’ out.
